Why handmade lavender soap
feels so different.
A creamy lather, a softer layered scent, and a bar made slowly by hand. Here is what sets it apart, and the forest story behind our Wild Lavender.
The short answer: handmade lavender soap feels different because it is made slowly, in small batches, with rich butters and oils and a real essential oil blend. That gives you a creamier lather, a scent that is soft and layered instead of sharp, and a bar that leaves your skin feeling clean and comfortable instead of tight.
What makes a handmade bar different from a store-bought one?
Most bars on a grocery store shelf are built to be cheap, fast and identical. A lot of them are technically detergent bars, scented with a single loud fragrance so they smell the same in every aisle in America.
A handmade bar is the opposite of that. I mix every batch myself, pour it, cut it, and then let it cure for weeks on the shelf before it ever gets a label. That waiting is where the magic happens. The bar gets harder, milder and longer lasting, and the scent settles in and gets deeper.
The ingredients are the other half. I use nourishing oils and butters, including fair-trade butters from women's collectives in Ghana, because I want a bar that feels like a treat on your skin, not a chore. Many people tell me they notice the difference the first time they wash their hands: the lather is thick and creamy, and their skin feels soft afterward.
The story behind Wild Lavender
I have always loved lavender, but I never wanted to make a plain "flowery" soap. The places that have moved me most are forests: the green hush of the rain forest in Washington, the trails in Maine, that feeling of being completely lost in creation and grateful for every bit of it. The Japanese call that feeling forest bathing, and it is the heart of everything I make.
So Wild Lavender pairs comforting, herbal lavender with a crisp, deep undercurrent of wild forest trees. You get the calm of lavender up top, and then the woods come in underneath and ground it. It is the bar I reach for at the end of a long day, and I am so thankful it has become our number one best seller. I really believe God tucked a little peace into the natural world for us to find, and this bar is my way of bottling some of it.
Is lavender soap a good choice for sensitive skin?
Many people with sensitive skin love gentle, handmade bars, and lavender is one of the softest, most familiar scents there is. That said, every person's skin is different. If you are sensitive to fragrance or essential oils, try a small spot first, read the ingredients, and go slowly.
If you would rather skip scent completely, our Unscented Tallow Balm was made for exactly that. And if you have a question about any ingredient, just email me. I answer every message myself.
A simple Wild Lavender evening ritual
This is how I turn an ordinary evening into a little spa night at home. It takes about twenty minutes, and you do not need anything fancy.
- Wash the day off. Lather up a bar of Wild Lavender Soap in a warm shower and take three slow breaths. Really smell it.
- Soak if you can. On the nights you have a little more time, pour a scoop of Wild Lavender Mineral Soak into the tub. It brings in evergreen and a hint of forest berries, like twilight on a quiet trail.
- Seal it in. While your skin is still a little damp, smooth on Wild Lavender Tallow Balm. It is whipped light as a cloud, so it melts right in and never feels greasy.
- Put the phone down. Lights low, a cup of tea, a few minutes of quiet or prayer. That part is free, and it might be the best part.
How to make your handmade bar last longer
Handmade soap has no hardeners or fillers, so it loves to dry out between uses. Keep it on a draining soap dish, out of the direct stream of the shower, and let it dry completely. Cutting a bar in half and using one piece at a time also helps it go further. Treat it well and one bar can last you weeks.
If you have never tried a handmade lavender bar, I hope Wild Lavender is your first. And if it already lives in your shower, thank you. It means the world to me that a little piece of the forest is part of your day.
With a grateful heart,
Joy
